At Kallaland – the largest calla grower in the Netherlands – modern technology and smart working methods are paramount. In the middle of the bulb region, we discover the colourful cut flowers and smart innovations of this special family business from Voorhout (NL).
High-quality callas
Two big flashy Furora machines dominate the large, modern shed when we step inside. The flowers are placed on the belt manually, after which the technology takes over. A detail photo is taken of each flower, from which information can be extracted. The flowers are then sorted according to these photos. These include bud size, stem thickness and total length. Based on this sorting, the calla cut flowers are bundled and packaged so that each bunch is perfect.
Calla cut flowers and calla tubers
Calla’s peak season takes place in August and September, when the beautiful flowers are lovingly hand-picked. The immense fields full of colour pink, purple, orange, yellow and white callas form a beautiful display. This year, Kallaland is dedicating some 35 hectares of land to the production of calla cut flowers and calla tubers. We see how the flowers are picked and learn how the tubers are propagated. The latter is a multi-year process, involving huge tractors and sorting machines, but above all a lot of handwork and love. Apart from the high season, when some 7.5 stems are picked by hand in a short time, this is what keeps the company constantly busy.
Calla export
Kallaland’s customers for calla cut flowers are mainly Dutch exporters. Through this intermediary, the callas find their way all over the world to enthusiastic flower lovers. The calla is a classic flower, suitable for a variety of events. From stately funeral arrangements to unique weddings.
