Colours and shapes of dahlias

What immediately stands out about dahlias are their petals. Sometimes they are solid in colour, but often strikingly bright with speckles or stripes. Some flowers have a single row of petals, while others consist of dozens. There are dahlias that can grow as long as 1.5 metres with a flower diameter of more than 20 cm. These striking appearances make dahlias unique and enchanting.

Patience for beautiful flowers

Jan Willem and Chris van Egmond have been growing dahlias at Van Egmond Nursery for five years. They grow eight different varieties from April to October. After the dahlia season, they switch to growing tulips. A permanent team of four people helps with the cultivation and in busy periods they call in extra help.

From the time the tubers go into the ground, it takes about three months for a dahlia to bloom. The enchanting dahlias are cut and bunched by hand. They are then watered and ready for the customer. Dahlias are often used for events such as weddings.

One advantage of growing dahlias in the greenhouse is the better quality of the flowers. As a dahlia supplier, you naturally want to deliver top quality. The greenhouse protects the flowers from hailstorms and windstorms, which benefits their quality.

Tips for longer keeping quality

Want to enjoy your dahlias for longer? Try these handy tips:

  • Avoid ripening fruit: Keep the dahlia away from ripening fruit. Ethylene gas causes flowers to bloom and wilt faster.
  • No draughts: Don’t put your flowers in a draughty spot. Draughts can damage the flowers and shorten their life span.
  • No direct sunlight: Don’t place your flowers in direct sunlight. The sun quickly makes them limp and less beautiful.
  • Refresh vase: Refresh the vase regularly. Change the water to keep the flowers fresh and radiant for longer.

With these tips, your dahlias will last extra-long!
