In rural Zwaamshoek thrives Kwekerij Bos-de Vries, a family business that shines in growing exclusive flowers. With the special Eryngium pandanifolium as its showpiece, the company has grown into a well-known name in the flower world since 2016. Thanks to their collaboration with companies like Greenflor, they now supply flowers to florists and wholesalers. In this blog, read the inspiring story of this thriving business and their role in the floriculture sector.

From horse pasture to flower paradise

It all started on a simple horse paddock. While the horses were grazing, the founder saw an opportunity. She decided to use the land to grow flowers. What started as a small project soon grew into a thriving business. Every day, she brought the homegrown flowers to the auction, where they were eagerly sold.

When her daughter joined the nursery, the business gained new energy. Together with her husband, an arable farmer, they brought valuable knowledge. This led to further specialisation in growing Eryngiums. Eventually, the Eryngium pandanifolium became the crown jewel of the nursery.

The year of the breakthrough

2016 was an important year for Bos-de Vries Nursery. The family’s hard work was rewarded with a prestigious award. This not only created brand awareness but also opened doors to wholesalers. This led to a collaboration with Greenflor, a leading player in the market, which recognised the unique Eryngium pandanifolium. This collaboration marked a new phase for the nursery, which has only continued to grow ever since.

Craftsmanship behind the beauty

Growing and cutting the Eryngium pandanifolium is a precise job. The prickly leaves make cutting tricky and those who are not careful run the risk of sore hands. ‘You should always cut with the direction of the hairs,’ explains the founder’s daughter. ‘Otherwise it feels like grabbing a cactus.’

Behind the beauty of this special flower is craftsmanship, patience and passion. Nursery Bos-de Vries is not just another family business; it is a place where love for the land and nature come together.
