Imagine a greenhouse full of 16 varieties of hydrangeas. From pure white to bright blue, short and long, large and small. That is what Edwin and Marco of nursery Nooitgedacht see every morning, the moment they step into their beautiful greenhouse to passionately grow the most beautiful hydrangea cut flowers.
Growing hydrangea cut flowers
Hydrangea season is here again and lasts from May to October. Throughout the season you can enjoy the 16 different varieties grown. Since not every hydrangea grows at the same time, there is labor spread and an extra large assortment. Hydrangeas are not one-hit wonders, they start as a small cutting and grow into fully flowering hydrangea plants in just two years.
Preparing for a new hydrangea season
Out of season, the employees of nursery Nooitgedacht do not sit still either. During the winter, the necessary preparations are made for the new season. First, the hydrangeas are pruned back to the pot. This makes the hydrangea plant grow again and produce beautiful flowering hydrangeas. Pruning hydrangeas is a labor-intensive process, as each hydrangea is pruned by hand, but in the end it produces something brilliant again. With a group of about 8 people and a 6-day work week, it takes about 2 months to prune all the hydrangeas.
“You cut the crop out, so to speak,” said Marco of nursery Nooitgedacht
The highest quality hydrangea cut flowers
As a supplier, it is important to be able to deliver not only beautiful but also good quality hydrangea cut flowers. Therefore, we carefully check for any diseases that may be present in plants. In addition, there are iron nets in the beds with hydrangea plants, so the hydrangeas keep growing nicely straight up. The hydrangeas also get the necessary amount of water. It depends on the weather conditions, what that necessary amount is. There is a dripper in each pot, so watering can be done automatically. As soon as the hydrangeas are removed from the pot, they are immediately re-watered. This contributes to the quality of the flowers.
Because of all these factors, the hydrangeas are breathtaking and of excellent quality. This makes them especially suitable for export abroad.
Not only because of the beautiful flowers they deliver, but also because of the fast and good service, Greenflor is incredibly enthusiastic about working with nursery Nooitgedacht.
“It is a very reliable and good grower!”
– John de Mooij, Greenflor buyer
